I remember the time I used to use face wipes to remove my make up. I never succeeded to have a whole cloth fully clean. Then one day I discovered the double cleansing and my skin never felt so clean and look so good. If you are living in the city, it’s really important to remove all the pollution and bacteria accumulated throughout the day. Double cleansing will prepare your skin for the next steps of your routine. Your skin needs to be perfectly clean to absorb expensive products and skincare actives applied after cleansing. otherwise, your serums and moisturizing cream will just sit on the top of an unclean skin. In conclusion, if your skin is perfectly clean, the rest of your skincare products will be able to penetrate more efficiently, doing their job and give you as a result this healthy and glowy skin you want.
As suggested by the name, Double cleansing is a two-step technique that ensures your face to be perfectly clean. You need to wash your face twice to have this result. Firstly with an oil-based cleanser then secondly with a water-based cleanser. The first wash is designed to dissolve the make-up, your sunscreen, and clean off all the pollution. Also, oil attracts oil, this step will help you to remove the excess sebum from your face and clean out your pores. The second wash is designed to remove the last impurities that can remain on your skin. This step can also provide hydration, exfoliate according to the cleanser you will use.
1- Start with an Oil cleanser
Apply your cleansing oil or balm to your hand. Always apply it on dry skin, massaging in gentle circular motions for at least 60 seconds. The longer, the better. That allows your cleanser to work, break down all the products on your face instead of removing 15s after application. Add a little bit of water to allow the emulsification: your oil will turn into a milky emulsion. This will make it easy to rinse off and not having a greasy face sensation. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.
2- Finish with a water-based cleanser
On damp skin, gently massage one pump of your cleanser. Do it for 60 seconds as well. Rinse off the cleanser with warm water only. Hot water will strip natural oils out of your face and you will end your double cleansing with a dry sensation. Continue your routine straight away.
I have oily skin, can I use oil cleanser?
Absolutely! Oily skin produces sebum, which is an impurity. And the most effective way to clear those out is double-cleansing. As I said earlier, oil attracts oil. it’s better to double cleanse with two gentle products than wash your face with one product designated for oily skin which can be harsh. However, choose a noncomedogenic oil such as rosehip.
Cant I used coconut oil or any oil from my kitchen to double cleanse?
Don’t use coconut as a cleanser (or any other face product with coconut in it). Some plant-based oils will definitely clog your pores. Also, if you mix them with water, they don’t emulsify. So you wouldn’t be able to wash off your face properly after the first step of your double-cleansing.
Do I need to oil cleanse if I don’t wear makeup?
Yes, you need to oil cleanse even if you don’t wear makeup. This step will melt away sebum, SPF, and pollution. Water-based cleansers will not clean your face well enough. You will still have impurities on your skin. The next steps of your routine would not be efficient with this layer of dirt which hasn’t been clean properly.
